“Can I bring you something else?” Skyler asked and Skai had to suppress a sight. He´s spent almost two hours in the bar and he still didn´t manage to drag Skyler into conversation about anything else then drinks.
“Nah, I´m fine,” he retorted.
The blond demon smiled at him and waltzed away, leaving Skai alone with his drink again.
It was honestly starting to be ridiculous. Skyler treated Skai as a random customer, as if they didn´t know each other for a long time. And his “working with smile” smile was seriously getting on Skai´s nerves. He wanted Skyler to actually smile. To notice him, and not only like a customer, or a friend.
Snapping his fingers in the air, Skai tried to attract the attention of the other demon. Skyler immediately headed back to him, looking happy to be of service.
“Yes, Skai?”
“When do you finish here?” Skai asked sourly.
Skyler blinked in confusion. “Why do you ask?”
“I´d like to walk you home.”
“But I finish late.”
“I´m a patient man,” Skai retorted, frowning. “I´d like to talk to you about something. Just…” he sighed and waved his hand, “get back to work, or whatever. I´ll wait.”
“Okay,” Skyler said, confusion never leaving his pale face. He had no idea why Skai wanted to talk to him, but if the other demon really wanted to wait, Skyler didn´t mind. Skai was always nice to him (or at least nicer than to other demons) and Skyler kind of liked him. Maybe they could be friends. Because of always being busy with work, Skyler didn´t have many friends and making one could be nice.
“Cool,” Skai said when Skyler turned around and left to serve another customer. He wasn´t happy that Skyler was leaving him again, but at least he could enjoy the view of Skyler´s ass. Not bad, he thought with a smirk.
Later, when Skyler´s shift was over and the bar closed (and Skyler finished cleaning it and putting the chairs on the tables), he met Skai in the alley behind the bar. The other demon was nervously pacing around, annoyed with the long wait.
“Done already?” Skai asked as soon as Skyler came closer.
“Yes,” the other demon said cheerfully. “Everything is prepared for tomorrow.”
“What?”
“The bar,” Skyler explained. “I tidied it and checked if we have enough beer. There should be a delivery tomorrow afternoon, so we should be fine but in the case-”
“Oh, of course you´ll be fine,” Skai interrupted him. “You always have extra beer in the back storage. Not that I´m proud about knowing it, but you always talk about it.”
Skyler blushed, lowering his head. “Sorry. Am I boring you?”
“You´re as boring as finding life on other planets, honey,” Skai comebacked winking, and Skyler chuckled. “Also, having your full attention is just as rare,” Skai added. “Really, do you have to work that much? Aren´t they paying you enough? I could help you with that, you know.”
“Oh, don´t worry! I earn very well. I just love that work, serving drinks and preparing snacks, it´s great,” Skyler explained enthusiastically. Talking about work, he brightened up like a kid during Christmas.
It annoyed a hell out of Skai.
“Cool,” he said. “But don´t you think about other things too? Like, about having some free time, hobbies, friends… maybe more than friends?”
“But I have friends,” Skyler said. “We´re friends, aren´t we?” he asked shyly.
Skai rubbed his nose, avoiding Skyler´s eyes. “Sure.”
“See? I have friends.”
“One friend,” Skai corrected him. “Through I admit that with my brilliant personality, I should count for more than one,” he added with a grin.
They walked together in silence for a while, neither of the demons knowing what to say. Then Skai got an idea.
“You know, when you don´t rest after work, it can worsen your work performance. You wouldn´t want that, right?” he asked innocently.
Skyler´s eyes widened in worry. “Of course not!”
“Then you should probably rest sometimes,” Skai suggested. “Maybe go out from time to time, to get some fresh air. I heard that having picnics in the parks is very healthy for workaholics.”
“Really?”
“Yes. I think I read in somewhere,” Skai said. “What about we had a picnic sometimes? It would be healthy for you and the fresh air could help you focus better when working,” he added, secretly biting his lip to suppress a grin. If Skyler had a weak spot, it was his love for work. Thus it was no surprise when the other demon hesitated and then nodded.
“All right. We can do that. Maybe next weekend. Or next Wednesday? I´ll have to check my shifts.”
“You don´t remember your shifts?” Skai wondered aloud, stuffing hands in his pockets. “That could be a first sign of being overworked. I think we should go to park this weekend, before you start forgetting the orders too.”
When Skyler made a worried face, Skai almost felt sorry for the other demon. Almost. But he was doing this for Skyler, after all. It would do Skyler well to get out of work once in a while, Skai thought. And maybe they can use the time together to get to know each other better. It wouldn´t hurt, would it? He glanced to side at Skyler, who was nervously biting his lower lip. Oh, those lips. How much would Skai like to kiss those lips!
“It´s a deal then,” he said. “I´ll pick you up on Saturday, 10 a.m. We´ll go to park, walk around, have some meal and you´ll enjoy some free time for a change. Okay?”
“Yes,” Skyler agreed meekly.
Yay, Skai thought. So I have like… wait, it´s Wednesday, right? No, it´s Thursday already, of course it´s Thursday, Skyler never leaves his bar before midnight when he has afternoon shift. So, that leaves me with two days to plan a perfect date on which I´ll charm you so much that you´ll fall in love with me and we´ll start dating.
Damn, Skyler thought, what if Skai is right? What if I really forget about resting and it can affect my work? At least I have a friend like him, who cares. What would I do without him? He´s the closest person in my life. Maybe I´m really lonely. It would be nice to have someone in my life, someone close. Maybe someone like Skai…
“So, we´ll see each other on Saturday?” Skai asked, tearing Skyler out of his thoughts.
“Wha- yes.” Skyler raised his head only to see that they already walked to the building where he lived. “Thank you for making me a company.”
“Pleasure was all mine,” Skai winked at him. “Have a good night.”
“Good night, Skai.”
* * *
Before Skyler could begin doubting his decision to have a picnic with Skai, it was time to go for it. He wasn´t sure if spending time with the other demon was a good idea, but Skai was always nice to him and while Skyler loved his job, sometimes he wondered what it would feel like to have something else to love too.
Maybe someone else.
Maybe Skai.
Damn it!
That much for not having time to worry, Skyler thought while walking towards the park where he was supposed to meet Skai. It would be easier to just go to work and smile at customers!
But there was no time to change his mind anymore. Not with Skai cheerfully waving at him from the park´s entrance.
“Hi, Skyler!”
Skyler put on one of his “working” smiles. “Hello.”
“Come on. It´s cool day for a picnic,” Skai said. “Sunny and warm and everything. Do you want to walk around a bit, or you want to snack something first?”
“Both sound fine to me. Let´s do what you want.”
“Huh? Ok.” Skai suspiciously eyed Skyler. “I´m for a walk.”
They began walking towards the park, Skai casting quick glances towards the other demon. He felt like something was off with Skyler, his smile was too tight and he agreed with a walk too quickly. Wait, he agreed with a smile! Service with smile, damn it. Skai knew that Skyler was a bit too submissive sometimes and that he often agreed with others just because he was too mellow to stand up for himself.
“We don´t have to walk around if you don´t want to,” Skai said.
“You don´t want to have a walk?” Skyler wondered.
Sighing, Skai rubbed his face. “I do, but you don´t have to agree with anything I want. I´d prefer if you said what you want. I´ll be glad to do anything as long as I can do it with you.”
Skyler blushed. “You´re so nice, Skai.”
“´m trying.”
They walked in silence for a moment, before Skai spoke up again. “Say, Skyler, are you dating anyone now?”
The other demon shook his head. “No. I´m usually at work…” he trailed off, not wanting to voice that he never had time for lovers because of his job. To his surprise, Skai took it quite positively.
“Cool, so you´re single, right?”
“Yes…?”
“Just wondering,” Skai winked at Skyler. “Through honestly, I wouldn´t mind stealing you from someone else.”
“Well, there´s no one else,” Skyler said, blushing. “I mean, all my exes somehow… disappeared. Dunno why.”
“Good for you, even better for me,” Skai joked. “Not that I´m against competition, but competing with your work is usually enough challenge. You know that it´s not everything, right?”
“Of course,” Skyler retorted without pause, but it sounded empty, like a phrase he got used to say when hearing similar questions. Skai could tell that Skyler didn´t really put his heart into it.
“I mean it, Skyler. It´s great that you love your work, but you shouldn´t forget about having some life beside it too. There are people who care about you, you know? Like me, for example.”
“Like you?”
Glancing at Skyler, Skai noticed that the other demon stopped walking and he stopped too and turned to him. “Yes, like me.” He grinned and came closer to Skyler. “Come on, you know that I always get what I want. Be a smart guy like you always are and just say that you like me too.”
Blushing, Skyler took a step back. “Me?” He tried to smile, but his lips didn´t obey him this time. “Skai, you know that I care about you, but I´ve never thought of you like this.”
Skai carelessly shrugged. “Start thinking, I have enough time.”
“Pardon me?”
“Come on, Skyler. I know you want to have love in your life too. You´re a nice person and nice people want to be loved.” While talking, Skai moved closer to Skyler, who stood frozen in place, unsure what to say. “We could try dating, for a start.”
“But…”
“What, honey?” Skai stopped right in front of Skyler, so close that the tips of their boots brushed. Biting his lips, Skyler looked down but Skai gently caught his chin and made him turn back to him. Even facing Skai, Skyler couldn´t look him in the eye, so he stared over Skai´s shoulder instead, when he spoke up.
“I don´t want you to disappear like all my exes before,” Skyler whispered. Nudging his chin, Skai made him to return his gaze.
“I´m not going anywhere,” he said with a smirk.
“You´re my only friend who doesn´t mind that I work so much. I don´t want to lose you.”
Skai rolled his crimson eyes over it. “Still not going anywhere.”
“But if we started dating, maybe you would disappear too.”
“I might be a demon, but my skillset doesn´t include turning invisible,” Skai joked. “I think we´re safe there.”
“You´re not taking it seriously enough,” Skyler complained, pouting.
The pout makes him look kinda cute, Skai thought. “Try me out,” he dared Skyler.
Skyler hesitated. Never before, he had an actual boyfriend who would stay with him despite him being a demon and having crazy work schedule (which was in fact close to 24/7). Of course he wanted love in his life besides the work, but he wasn´t sure if he had enough time to date between shifts and taking care about his bar and making up new recipes for fancy drinks. Thinking about it like that, his life sounded a bit lonely. It could be nice to have someone there with him.
“Okay,” he breathed out, his chin still leant on Skai´s palm. The touch made him nervous but not the bad kind of nervous. He kind of liked it, in a way. “We could try dating… sometimes.”
“Okay,” Skyler said again, smiling a bit. Maybe Skai was right and he could learn to love something else than his work too.
Or someone, he thought, glancing at their holding hands.
