Small group of criminals were nervously sitting around the table. They spent hour interrogating both possible thieves but they got nothing. Neither of young captives knew anything useful and neither had it. If one of them was the real thief, he wouldn´t have time to hide it before getting caught.

“What should we do with them?” Bald criminal asked impatiently. “I can throw them into river between the patrols.”

“No,” high man sitting at the head of the table said. “We´ll keep them just in case. No one will find them here, we can just leave them locked down and come to take care about them later.”

“We can´t risk that one of them is actually our thief,” man in long coat agreed. “It wouldn´t cost us any effort to keep them here.” Rest of the criminals nodded their heads in agreement, silently whispered among themselves. Man in long coat got up and they went silent.

“Let´s find the thief.”

Jeremia followed Ethan after the other boy unlocked the door. Ethan headed towards the stairs leading out of the basement. Both of them tried to stay down and not to make any noise which could attract the kidnappers. So far it seemed that they were alone but Jeremia´s heart was stampeding anyway. At least the corridor wasn´t pitch black like the cell.

They stopped at the end of stairs, anxiously listening for any signs of danger. Jeremia didn´t even dare to hope that they could actually escape. Ethan nervously glanced at him over his shoulder and then headed upstairs. Jeremia quickly followed.

Upstairs, it seemed that the gangers already left, maybe to capture another suspects. Jeremia only prayed that they didn´t leave anyone on guard because he and Ethan would have no chance against armed man. Jeremia licked his dry lips and stopped to look around.

The house seemed abandoned and old, with dust covered shelves and dirty carpets. There were no lights on in the house so Jeremia and Ethan had to crawl forward in dim light coming from outside.

“What if door is locked?” Jeremia whispered intently and Ethan shushed him. Younger man glared at Jeremia and shook his head angrily to shut Jeremia up. Jeremia bit his lips and nodded. The silence made him nervous but he decided to wait with questions.

Ethan leaded them towards the backside of the house. They passed through the kitchen and towards the back door. There, Ethan stopped and carefully pushed on the door. Jeremia was crunching behind him, trembling. Sigh of relief escaped him when Ethan slowly pushed the door open and sneaked outside. Jeremia hastily followed, almost hitting his nose against the door.

Outside, Jeremia gratefully gulped the fresh air. Down in the cell, he wasn´t sure if he´d ever feel it again. But he wasn´t safe yet and Ethan´s grip on his forearm reminded it to Jeremia. Ethan was biting his lips nervously and he pointed to the garden. The grass was long and messy like no one cared about it and Jeremia could see the silhouette of the garden gate behind the wild bush.

Nodding, Jeremia began moving towards the garden gate. Ethan stayed close behind him and kept looking around. It didn´t calm Jeremia, who was crawling forward through the wild grass. His heart was hammering against his bruised ribs.

Finally, Jeremia reached the gate and pulled himself through it. Ethan did the same and stopped for a moment, panting. Jeremia sat next to him and tried to get his own breathing under control. His sweaty hair stuck to his forehead and Jeremia pushed it aside so he could look around again.

“Where now?” He asked very quietly. Ethan shrugged between panting.

“Through neighbour gardens as far as we can and then we should try to leave the suburbs. They are probably still searching the surroundings so we gotta leave here as soon as possible.”

Jeremia nodded and tried to stand up despite the exhaustion. He helped Ethan on his feet and supported him when Ethan wavered.

“What did you steal from them?” Jeremia hissed furiously. He was dying to ask since he realized that Ethan was the thief. It took all his willpower to wait until they were safely out of the house but now, Jeremia just needed to know why he was kidnapped by mafia. Ethan bit on his lip and looked down. Jeremia, who was still holding his arm, shook the younger man. “What?”

“This,” Ethan whispered and raised his other hand. He was holding small black book with a lot of papers stuck between its pages. Jeremia stared at the book.

“But… You didn´t have it before. They searched you!”

“They caught me before I got away from here,” Ethan explained, still looking to his feet. “I knew I mustn´t get caught with it so I hid it in that bush next to the garden gate.” Jeremia let go of Ethan and grabbed the book. “Wait, what-“

“We must to give it back!” Jeremia whispered angrily. “When they´ll have it back they won´t be looking for thief anymore. They won´t be looking for us!”

“You´re mad? I can´t just give it back, not after the everything-“

“And that´s exactly why we must return it,” Jeremia interrupted him. “They´ll kill us. Don´t you get it?!” Ethan frowned and tried to snatch the book from Jeremia´s hand. But Jeremia held it high over his head, taking advantage on being taller that Ethan.

“Do you think that I stole it for myself?” Ethan argued desperately. “I need to bring it to the client!”

“Maybe it´s time to find normal job,” Jeremia insisted. “This will get you in jail or to the other world. Do you want to die so much?”

“There is nothing else for me. I have to do something.”

“Yes, you can get yourself killed!”

“You don´t get it,” Ethan almost cried. “Not everyone had family like you. I don´t have anything. I gotta take care about myself on my own.” He ran his hands through his hair and desperately looked at the book in Jeremia´s hand. “If I bring that to client I´ll get lot of money and I´ll be able to start a new life.”

“Not when they catch you,” Jeremia said, pointing back to the house. “They won´t stop looking for you!”

“I´ll leave the city. I-I´ll go somewhere far away and then it won´t matter anymore.” Ethan had almost tears in his eyes. “It contains all their deals and contracts,” he said, pointing to the book. “The concurrent gang will pay me twenty thousand dollars for it, can you imagine so much money?” The book almost fell from Jeremia´s hand when he heard the sum. But he controlled himself and swallowed.

“But…” Jeremia tried to bring up more arguments but he could only think about how long his poor mother would have to work for that money. How much it could help them if… But there would be still mafia hunting them. What did it came to his mind!

“Just give it to me,” Ethan pleaded. “I can give you part of the reward if you want, just give it to me and let´s run from here.” Jeremia´s heart was stampeding again when he slowly lowered his hand, but then he stopped.

“If I´ll give to you now, I´ll never see you again,” he reasoned.

“It´s not like I have anywhere to go,” Ethan reminded him bitterly. “If… if I´ll share the reward with you, will you let me stay with you? Not here, we gotta leave the city,” he added quickly, “but somewhere else?”

“Else?” Jeremia swallowed. He imagined his family moving away, to some small town where would be less of mafia. They could live in nicer house that won´t have leaking roof and maybe he wouldn´t have to have so many jobs… It sounded too good.

Until Ethan jerked the book out of Jeremia´s hand. To his surprise, the boy didn´t turn on heel and ran away. Ethan pressed the book to his chest and nervously looked at Jeremia.

“So? You should leave the city too, now when they kidnapped you.”

“Maybe…” Jeremia carefully looked at the book in Ethan´s hands. “But I can´t ran away without my family.” Ethan shrugged.

“It´s twenty thousands. That should be enough for you and your family too.”

“Part of it will be yours,” Jeremia reminded and Ethan grinned painfully.

“I said that I had nowhere to go. Maybe I could pay you a rent if you let me stay in your house.”

Jeremia once more looked at the dreadful house behind their backs. This was surely the last chance to return the book and escape the attention of the mafia. But it would be really safer to leave the city after this night. And for leaving, they will need money. But it would be such a great risk.

“You´re wrong,” he said and Ethan´s eyes widened in worry. “You have family now.”

Request for :icongreendragon-fly: for 1. place in AmateurArtistArmy´s cosmos contest. This is the last chapter. Enjoy!

Theme was: getting into complex trouble. It was during Prohibition that organized crime became prominent and all generations and classes got caught up into it. It doesn't have to be about American Prohibition, it doesn't even have to be an adventure, just being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Jeremia and Ethan belong to GreenDragon-Fly, all other characters belong to me.

I absolutely love what you did for the ending! I'm usually a depressing writer by habit(the few stories I've submitted do not prove this though), but yours left me feeling all warm inside. Thank you so much for doing this for me.
